Here There Be Dragons (1 and 2)

“Here There Be Dragons (1 and 2)” are site specific animated mutoscope mechanisms designed for the Porous Borders Festival. The mutoscopes were installed on opposite sides of Conant Street (one was in Detroit and the other was in Hamtramck) and featured hand drawn sketches of dragons inhabiting the landscape. This piece is reminiscent of ancient maps depicting monsters at the “edge of the world.” I was inspired by the myths that people invent to describe unknown and mysterious places (AKA the “other”.)
